| Taftville Battles Building Fire TAFTVILLE, - Just after 4:00 P.M. (10/11) the Norwich Fire 911 center started receiving numerous 911 calls reporting a fire at 292 Norwich Ave. At 16:18hrs the Taftville Fire Department was alerted of the fire and upon the arrival of Taftville Asst Chief Paul Lebrecque, heavy smoke was pouring out of the 3rd and 4th flrs of a 4 stry wood apartment building. Upon arrival of the Taftville's first-due engine and tower fire was emitting from 3 windows on the 3rd flr "D" side, 1 window 3rd flr "B" side and a dormer window on the 4th flr. This summoned mutual aid from Occum, Yantic, and City of Norwich Eng-2. Taftville's ET-21 crew stretched an alley line up to the 3rd flr and forced entry to the 3rd flr apartment where heavy smoke and fire occupied 4 rooms of that floor. While 21's crew started extinguishing the fire, Tower 25's crew went to the roof to cut the vent hole. A second line from the 2nd Taftville engine made their way to the 4th flr where they encountered heavy fire in an apartment under construction. ET-22's crew was meet by Norwich's engine 2 crew while Occum and Yantic crews meet up with ET-21's crew to assist them with extinguishment. The fire was knocked down in 30 minutes, while all occupants accounted for and no firefighter injuries. The occupants were cared for by the Southeastern Ct Chapter of the Red Cross and relocated. The fire in under investigation by the Norwich FMO and Norwich Police Department. |
